Still Using Internet Explorer? Please Read This!

July 7th, 2008 Posted in Latest News | 1 Comment »

Michael Horowitz is an independent computer consultant and the author of several classes on Defensive Computing. He views Defensive Computing as taking steps, when things are running well, to avoid or minimize the inevitable problems down the road.

From an entry published July 6, 2008 he writes, “if you surf the web on a Windows computer, you are safer using Firefox as opposed to Internet Explorer.” read the article here

In the article he quotes, “Another day, another gaping hole affecting fully patched versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser” And, apparently, Microsoft has no plans to patch or fix IE to protect against the latest vulnerabilities. “Tuesday July 8th is Patch Tuesday and according to Ryan Naraine at ZDNet there will be no fixes to Internet Explorer, which currently suffers from several known bugs.”

What’s the alternative? Tech-savvy users overwhelmingly use FireFox. You can either go to Mozilla.com and download a copy or click on the Firefox graphic (just to the right of this article) and download a customized copy with a Google Toolbar already installed. Please?

A long, long time ago in a place, far, far away…

Go Green

What does that mean? How can a hosting company “go green”?

Simple..we’ve converted all of our production servers to ‘virtual servers’, reducing our energy footprint and consumption by 90%. Energy demand, primarily electricity, for data centers has been a major concern for some time. In fact, the availability of low-cost servers and the growing trend toward outsourcing IT functions such as e-mail, database hosting and data backup/storage has led to many data centers scrambling for adequate electrical power.

Why Remote Backup is a ‘no-brainer’

September 20th, 2007 Posted in Latest News, Remote Backup | No Comments »

Remote Backup, an internet-based business service offered by SouthBay Network, automates the tedius task of daily backups of your business critical data. It encrypts the data, with strong 128 bit encryption, compresses the dataset and uploads the backup for storage on our storage server, co-located at 1 Wilshire, in downtown Los Angeles. The data is then replicated on a redundant server, located in a data center in Las Vegas.

It’s easy, simple, low-cost and an example of common sense applied to technology, one of our specialties. But, it’s not what makes our Remote Backup special. What makes RB a ‘no brainer’ is Read the rest of this entry »
